This report on sustainable development sets out to explain some of the principles and standards by which Elementis is run and how well we are measuring up to them.
It covers what we are doing to help all the members of the Elementis team stay healthy and happy and to achieve their full potential. It details our safety and environmental performance, what we are doing to improve that performance and how we are using our specialist knowledge in each of the Elementis businesses to increase our contribution to society. It also looks at how we interact with the communities around us and what we are doing to support the involvement of our employees in local community activities.
You may ask,"Why is this a priority?". The answer, first and foremost, is that we believe that we should behave as a good corporate citizen and that all those who have an involvement with Elementis - for example our employees, our shareholders, our customers, our suppliers and the communities in which we operate - have every right to know how we are doing.
The principle of sustainable development is that we should find a way of meeting today's economic and social needs without prejudicing the ability of future generations to do so. It is clear that this means that we must use natural resources wisely. It also follows that we must think carefully about all the people who are touched by our activities and ensure that their
experience of Elementis is beneficial. The well being of the chemicals
industry, more than most, is dependent on our reputation for being
competent, responsible and honest.
As you read through this report, I hope you will see that there is much that
we can be proud of in our sustainable development performance this far.
Significant improvements have been made in many health, safety and
environmental areas. However, our emphasis is on continuous and further
improvement in all areas of sustainable development. We intend to make
the publication of this information an annual event, so that we can report
on our progress towards these goals. We would also welcome your views
and input on our approach to sustainable development. If you have any
questions or comments regarding initiatives underway or planned, or on
our communication of these programmes, please contact
