Our commitment to the environment

Projects have been initiated to improve air emissions at the Specialties plant, Jersey City, US.

Emissions of Volatile Organic Chemicals (VOCs) have also reduced due to the commissioning of a catalytic oxidiser at our Specialties plant in St Louis, US.

Several other recent projects have been initiated to improve air emissions, including an adsorber/oxidiser for VOC control at the Specialties plant in Jersey City, US, an electrostatic incinerator at the Pigments plant in Easton, US, and gas cleaning from the oxide kilns at the Chromium plant at Eaglescliffe, UK.

Discharges to water
We measure water quality in terms of the Biological Oxygen Demand, Chemical Oxygen Demand and Total Suspended Solids. Since comprehensive data collection only began in 2002 it is not yet possible to discern meaningful trends. However, there are early indications that improvements are being made. Substantial work is ongoing and includes, for example, a new process at the Specialty Rubber plant in Malaysia, which virtually eliminates production of zinc-containing liquid waste effluent.

Solid waste
Due to the nature of our business, we generate a certain quantity of hazardous waste. The volume of this waste has been reduced more than ten fold since 1999, due in large part to the introduction of a residue treatment process at our Eaglescliffe, UK, Chromium plant.

Hazardous waste (mt/mt)

Hazardous waste
Since this waste has been rendered non-hazardous, this means there has been an increase in our non-hazardous waste. Here too improvements have been made.
