Flame retardancy plastics
Meeting halogen free environmental, health and safety requirements
In response to increasing regulatory and consumer concerns on the environmental and health impact of halogenated flame retardants, organoclays act as a more environmentally friendly alternative. Beyond their numerous process improvement benefits in plastic compounding, organoclays have a distinct advantage: they do not generate toxic halogenated dioxins and furans when exposed to combustion. This sets them apart from traditional halogenated flame retardants.
Today, organoclays are strategically incorporated into plastic compounding for various consumer products. They work synergistically with other flame-retardant additives, enhancing their efficacy and potentially reducing the overall amount of flame retardant required to achieve the desired level of fire protection. This proves particularly valuable in applications where preserving the physical properties of the polymer is essential or where material weight is a critical factor.
