Job Summary
The R&D team is comprised of a synthesis group, a scale-up / process engineering group as well as analytical group. Within the synthesis group, there is a team focused on water-based technologies, one on organic chemistry and another on inorganic chemistry. This position falls within water-based technologies and will be based in Sci Park, NJ. The successful candidate is an accomplished Senior Research Scientist with a proven track record of driving innovation and delivering impactful solutions across industries. Deep expertise in the design, development and execution of complex formulations along with proven ability to operate effectively and cross functionally in a global organization is required. Excels in customer engagement, identifying innovative product opportunities, and leveraging chemical design expertise to develop novel industrial additives. The senior research scientist collaborates with process engineering teams to scale laboratory innovations, resolve production challenges, and enhance process safety. The role involves hands-on research work and strategic planning with responsibilities that influence global product launches and customer partnerships. The senior scientist is skilled in mentoring junior scientists, fostering teamwork, and ensuring high-quality research outcomes. The ideal candidate thrives in cross-functional collaboration and represents the company at meetings and conferences through impactful participation and/or presentations. The position will focus on water based technologies for coatings / performance specialties.
Job Description
- Design and develop Orgranic Synthesis formulations to support research and product development.
- Provide strategic input while leveraging technical skills to effectively engage with demanding customers, lead technical discussions to understand and address customer needs.
- Identify innovative product opportunities by actively listening to market demands, rather than pursuing offset solutions. Assess feasibility using advanced chemical, regulatory and manufacturing expertise.
- Lead the design and synthesis of novel industrial additives, targeting applications in water based coatings, and potentially also water based energy applications or other performance specialties areas.
- Collaborate with process engineering teams to translate laboratory innovations into scalable and efficient manufacturing processes. Apply root cause analysis to help solve production issues, improve processes or practicality and safety.
- Coach and develop junior scientists, share chemical knowledge and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to drive innovation and ensure high-quality research outcomes.
- Draft and file patent applications to protect innovations and strengthen the company's IP portfolio. File defensive patents to safeguard technology areas and mitigate risks from competitors.
- Work effectively with marketing, sales, product stewardship, operations, and applications teams to support sales efforts and drive the launch of new products.
- Represent the company at key national and international forums, delivering impactful presentations and publications that position the company at the forefront of the industry.
- Safety leadership: promote and uphold the company’s safety culture by ensuring compliance with safety standards and advocating for continuous improvement in workplace safety.
What will it take
- Educational background: Ph.D. in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field.
- Experience: Proven experience (typically 10+ years) in chemical research, product development, and process innovation, preferably in industries such as Coatings, Personal Care, or Energy products.
- Innovation skills: Demonstrated ability to develop and synthesize novel industrial additives and translate laboratory innovations into scalable manufacturing solutions.
- Communication and interpersonal skills: Exceptional ability to engage with colleagues and customers, represent the company at forums, and deliver impactful presentations and publications.
